Am I going soft or what?

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I posted a blog. I feel a bit superfluous, in a way, that I feel so well and lots of other people are going through such a tough time. But then again maybe it'll inspire optimism that it doesn't always have to be grotty!

Anyway - this is what I was wondering. When I first joined this site, I'm sure there was a section to do with foody stuff: recipes and good nutrition etc. Can I find it? Can I buggery! So was I imagining things or am I just too thick to find the right bit?

I was also wondering if there was a section about helpful books to read.

So what can I say that's useful? Well, have I twined on yet about the benefits of exercise? I know you don't always feel up to it or in the mood, and for some it might not be possible - but I joined a local walking group in the summer and it's been brilliant. It's organised by our local council, who run sessions to train walk leaders. I went along with my partner and it was a good day with a nice lunch, a bit of a walk and lots of tips about leading a walk that would never occur to me. Our scheme is called 'Get Fit On Foot' (Ellesmere Port and Neston') and I'm sure other councils must run somthing similar. We walk for an hour (or a little more) each Friday. Those who don't want to do the whole walk generally slope off for a coffee while the hearty types do the full monty. It doesn't feel at all like hard work as there's plenty of gabbing going on and you don't notice the distance covered! Meeting regularly each week is a good incentive to get going - even tho there are some Friday mornings when I'd much rather go back to bed! Aside from the obvious benefits, walking also helps to alleviate depression.

End of lecture. Rant to follow.

Anybody else out there who's sick unto death with all the pre-Christmas hoo-hah? It's only a day, for heaven's sake. It's only a dinner and a few pressies with friends and family. Why is everybody getting so het up?

They have the right idea in Spain. We used to go for Chrismas and New Year, when my old dad was able to travel (he's gone off the boil now) and it was great. Everybody goes to church on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day, whole families go out for lunch (which is not overpriced, just normal prices) and that's about it, really. Not too much fuss, just families enjoying a day off and each other's company. What's wrong with that?

And as for all this house cleaning lark, give everybody a stiff drink and they won't see the cobwebs and the dust!

Cleaning the house for Christmas

Ruthless's picture

Maybe for those out to work, a chance to do a bit more than usual to fight the encroaching grime. If O/H wasn't so antisocial, I would have people in every week, just to keep me up to scratch.

Exercise is just great, and walking is fun as long as the group don't 'yomp' everywhere. I like the kind of walk where you can stop for a minute to take a photo or enjoy a flower in the hedgerow and still catch up by picking up the pace. This morning I didn't really feel like getting out of bed, but I go every day with Cassie, the border collie, and as we started off, it began to snow. When we got to the Country Park, we set off across the football field, and Cass just went crackerdog. Jumping about, picking up sticks, throwing them in the air and catching them. Every time I began to feel tired, she would give me a lift by just enjoying some part of the trip.

I'm not much motivated these days as I have had a chest cold and just as I was getting over that, I tripped over the paper recycling bin on the way to put the milk bottles out on Sunday, and fell against the front door. I have a bump on my head, and a ripening black eye. So motivation is not that great. If I didn't have the daily habit, I often wouldn't go at all. I do it for me, but the dog helps a lot.

Hi Shelagh - personally, I'm delighted to hear that you feel so well. We need to hear the good news as well, don't we? So come on and share all your "ups" with us, because I find it uplifts me. The exercise thing is very good advice; I try to get out for long walks, when the weather's not too bad. I dance around my flat most of the day, with my MP3 stuck in my ears - LOVE music, so I guess that also counts as exercise, eh? NOPE, sorry I can't join in your rant about Christmas, because I LOVE it, ALL of it, so you'll have to throw cabbages at me, or something, lol Also, quite enjoy the odd spot of cleaning - only when husband is out of flat. So, I'm sorry it's all BAH HUMBUG from you, but it's I''M DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS, from my end. lots of ho ho ho and lotsa love kate xxxxxxxxxxx

O/H?

Hi Linda - not a hundred per cent sure, but Rwth could mean "other half" or "old husband" - take your pick. Sorry for putting words into your wee mouth Rwth, lol love kate xxxxxxxxxxx

Sorry Linda

I did mean other half. One sometimes needs to be discreet on boards about family names. DD means darling daughter, DS darling son.

Just because I subscribe to the Bah Humbug school Kate, it doesn't mean I don't want other people to enjoy the magic. There are so many different kinds of magic. Ours is just sitting together by a log fire reading, eating chocs and yummy food and dozing occasionally, Or sitting right here at our separate computers putting the world to rights with our electronic friends.

It was a beautiful morning today for a walk Shelagh. The red sun beaming down and highlighting the autumn/winter colours. Yesterday, it was hawthorn berries in the snow.

walking and dogs

shelaghterry's picture

Hi Rwth (got your name right at last - is it Welsh?)

Yeah, dogs are great motivators for the old walking. I had dogs all my life until about 5 years ago when my last old friend died. I was so upset that I couldn't face getting another one. Aside from anything else, we go away a lot and the price of boarding kennels almost doubles the cost of the holiday! We used to put two of them (a soft lurcher and feisty boder collie/spaniel) in a 'family kennel' and they loved going. Used to be out of the car and beating the door down to get in! There's no way we could afford this place now as it's gone upmarket (and some!) with dog apartments and penthouses, hydrotherapy pool, grooming and slimming services! Better than most people can afford.

Hope you've got over your cold and the bruising is going down. Sure you weren't drunk?

Best wishes, Shelagh

significant joke

shelaghterry's picture

An elderly couple were watching a TV evangelist programme.
The preacher said, 'Touch the screen with the part of your body you want to be healed.'
The old lady shuffled to the telly and pushed her arthritic hip against it.
The old feller rubbed his willy up against the screen.
His wife said to him. 'It's a healing programme you daft old sod, they can't raise the dead!'

Well, mildy droll?

Hi Kate,

Thanks for your reply. I suppose I might as well share the up-beat stuff because I'll be squawking louder than anybody if something goes wrong!

Oh, go on then, you hearty bugger, enjoy your Christmas if you must! Happy giblets etc.

Best wishes, Shelagh

Dear Kathryn,

Good for you! I don't mind the festivities if it's kept in proportion. It's the going over the top and the waste of money that pigs me off. Enjoy a nice relaxing day without having to worry about paying a huge credit card bill next year.

Best wishes, Shelagh
