Cosy Cottage Retreat 2008
Hello everyone! I am writing this special ‘Blog’ to tell you all about a very unique event which took place in November 2008. My name is Jools and I have been a member of What Now? since May this year. I have used the site regularly since finding it, and have received fantastic support over the following months. I recently attended the Leicester Fiesta which was an opportunity to meet some of the members of What Now?. It was an amazing experience, one which I will never forget……..but I came away with the feeling that there were still conversations I wanted to have with people but the time had gone so quickly it wasn’t possible - and I was also feeling like I really needed a holiday, having been on treatment since March this year. In conversation with Marsha I hatched a plan to try to organise a holiday where we could have a whole week together - to share and understand each others' stories and situations and also to have some fun times.
As you are probably aware when you are being treated for cancer it is a long process - people go onto half pay and sick pay and affording a holiday isn’t always possible - and yet you NEED a holiday so badly. I am lucky enough to have a best friend who owns a cottage in Northumberland. Because of her generosity in offering a massive discount and her contacts, we were able to rent her cottage and the cottage next door too for a week. The holiday places were made available for £66 each, including food, making it affordable to us all. I watched everyone’s progress and as the time neared I offered places to those completing treatments (or gaps in treatment) and who had offered support to myself over the last few months (and their carers in order that they could travel). We all had felt a connection to each other because over the past few months we have regularly given each other cyber support and cyber hugs throughout our various trials and tribulations. The purpose of the week was to recharge our batteries, to meet our friends for the first (and in some cases second) time and to share and understand each others' stories.
Some people had paid to come and then had to cancel because treatment got in the way so I am sorry they couldn’t come, you know who you are. The members who made it were Steffy, HayleyM, Denning, Escoffier, Kt, Debbie, Metzy, Caroledico, Kate2003 (and friend Maggie) me, Lesley Wigston, and Penny. As the organiser of the event (or ‘Head Girl’ as Denning named me) I had the dubious joy of organising everyone’s pick up from the various modes of transport on various days from various places (Airports, Train stations - yes plural). Next were the sleeping arrangements - NIGHTMARE but I managed to sort it eventually. We had amazing times where we shared our individual stories and shed tears and this all in an atmosphere where it was OK to cry and to be heard - amazing! We also laughed and laughed and laughed in unison, at each other and at life (we needed shares in Tenna Ladies).
Here is our story:
On Wednesday the 5th of November I drove down to collect Kt and bring her to my house, we have known each other since May and it was great to finally meet up. We spent a day relaxing before Friday the 7th of November arrived - I set the sat-nav with the postcode of the train station, and Kt and I went to pick up HayleyM and Lesley Wigston . Oh dear - disaster struck we ended up BEHIND the station instead of in front!! I decided to turn left and go through a underpass only to find that I was in a taxi-rank full of irate taxi drivers (OMG great start I thought) so after mounting the pavement and decking a few startled pedestrians I finally arrived at the front of the station. Kt and I found Hayley and Lesley and return to the car. Hayley explained her suitcase handle had stuck in the open position. We opened the boot (already full) and looked at her suitcase (so big I thought that maybe she was never going home again) and realised there was no way it would fit in without taking everything out of the boot. We then spent 15 minutes trying to re pack the car - a bit like the Krypton Factor !! With everyone packed tightly with bags and baggage and provisions we were soon whizzing up the A1, heading North on a busy Friday evening. Just as I was remarking that when we see the sign to turn off for the cottages that we will have to turn right immediately, that very turning appeared very quickly - as I was doing 70 miles an hour in the fast lane …….screech ……indicate……..screech…….emergency stop…….just managing to avoid careering in front of the traffic on the A1 travelling in the other direction. All the bags and the passengers hurtled forward and things dropped on the floor. ‘Oh‘, I said ‘Ooops’ , ‘almost there’ (thinking ‘ho hum’, ‘almost killed them all then’). How we got there in one piece I will never know. Eventually we did all arrive safely (but possibly a bit shaky - I am sorry girls) and I showed them the cottage and everyone was happy with the accommodation. We piled in, unpacked our bags and headed to the pub, conveniently situated on the back of the cottage (good planning or what!!).
Day 1, Saturday
The rest of the gang were arriving today and we had breakfast and dressed and waited for everyone. Penny arrived, and decided to go exploring the area as she couldn't stay all week and Lesley Wigston decided to go with her. They saw Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and Bamburgh. Steffy was picked up from Berwick Train station by me, Hayley and Kt. Carole (caroledico) arrived by car, Metzy and Escoffier also arrived by car and were there in time to receive the shopping from Asda home delivery (who organised all this - Gold star award -- oops that was me tee hee) Debbie and Denning arrived after a loooong drive from the deep south. Once everyone had arrived back at the cottage we ate together (food cooked by master chef Escoffier) and then the wine was opened and Quiz night began. Copious laughter and funny moments ensued as various members read out their prepared questions. Kt had some funny questions which we found quite difficult (actually they were all quite difficult), Carole and Denning also did ‘rounds‘. This night was an excellent way for us to gel together as a group and everyone enjoyed it. I have no idea who won!!
Day 2, Sunday
Some people nursed hangovers! Penny went home (sniff sniff). The braver among us, me Denning, Carole and Lesley decided we would go on a shopping expedition to the Living North Christmas Fayre at Newcastle Racecourse. Denning ‘blagged’ at the front desk and somehow we got in for free (???? - don‘t tell Thomas (admin) how she did it) and a grand shopping extravaganza began, with lots of Christmas presents purchased, including a fairy for the Christmas Tree and a super Pirate Raincoat for Carole’s son Sam. After we had ‘spent up’ we drove to Newcastle train station and dropped Lesley Wigston there as she had to go home ready for work the next day (boo hoo). Kt and Hayley stayed in the cottage while we went to shop! They eventually got up and showered. Hayley, Steffy, Debbie, Escoffier and Metzy then went to the beach to have a look. They had a stone skimming competition, Steffy was the winner and Metzy decided they should train her for the Olympics! Escoffier decided that Limpets are food (???????) and collected some to cook later ….ewww. They then went back to the cottages to collect Kt and they went off to the pub only to find they weren’t serving food anymore. So, of they went to a little café and had a nice lunch. Afterwards, they went back and Hayley and Escoffier played tennis!! Meanwhile, Debbie and Kt went to Newcastle Airport to collect Kate2003 and her friend Maggie. Debbie had brought a huge joint of Venison with her for tea and she charged Steffy with the job of basting it every 20 minutes while she drove to the airport. Poor Steffy was up and down all afternoon and was quite exhausted by the end of it!! A delicious meal was produced, with vegetarian options for those who weren’t keen on eating/trying Bambi.
Day 3, Monday
Pamper day for Debbie, Denning , Jools, Hayley, Kt, and Carole at the local Spa - massages, Indian head massages, facials, manicures and pedicures (in various combinations) helped us feel a little more human, if poorer. Carole had a couple of 'senior moments' whilst at the spa - firstly, she complained that the locker had kept her £1, turned out that she hadn't noticed there were no clothes in the locker and her key was still attached to the dressing gown she was wearing (yes, that's right - completely wrong locker!!) Later, she lost her shoes (doh!) had all the spa staff and Denning searching high and low for them, eventually Denning found them under the treatment bed in the beauty room, whilst the poor therapist hung around with her coat on waiting to lock up!! Meanwhile Escoffier, Laura, Steffy, Kate2003 and Maggie explored Berwick for the day. They purchased a stunt kite and some lovely food. We ate, had long talks and a few drinks to help the evening along.
Day 4, Tuesday
Lazy Day. Denning, Debbie, Escoffier, Metzy, Carole, and Steffy walked, skimmed stones and flew the stunt kite (and killed it!!) on Beadnell and Bamburgh beaches. Me, Hayley and Kt watched Flashdance and sat in Pj’s until the evening and then almost everybody had fish and chips for tea. Penny had gifted us with an aromatherapy massage kit and hand and/or feet massages were performed by Denning and Metzy (lovely). Lots more talking and sharing of experiences took place.
Day 5, Wednesday
By now morning rituals were established where Escoffier woke up anyone silly enough to want to have a sleep in with loud bashing of a wooden spoon on a pan !! Songs were sung to welcome everyone donwnstairs, ‘Good Morning, Good Morning’. After shoehorning Kt (who can sleep for England) out of bed the whole gang went to Alnwick Gardens for the day. Denning again worked her magic and we wangled a discount on the entrance fee (how does she do it???). Carole hired an electric scooter for Kt, and Kate2003 had a wheelchair. We saw the large fountain and the sculpture garden, and ate lunch too. Later Denning chatted up two (young and cute) gardeners who were a lovely shade of red by the time Hayley, Carole and I walked past them (whatever did she say to them??) A visit to the Poison Garden was enjoyed and there was even an opportunity to bow down in honour of the poisonous chemo trees (yew) as our saviour from cancer!! Some went on a rope bridge walk among the tree tops - but no -one saw Ant and Dec, and we peeked into Europe’s largest tree house!
Day 6, Thursday
Debbie and Denning had to go home -- booo hooooo -- and many tears were shed after we did the 'good morning, good morning' song and the ‘everybody dance now’ dance routine (you had to be there to see it) to see them off. Escoffier and Metzy stayed back at the cottages - then went to explore SeaHorses (SeaHouses really but it’s Escoffier’s Spanish accent you see). Carole, me, Kt, Hayley, Steffy, Kate and Maggie went on an expedition to a craft village - only to discover that it was closed (it was like a set from some creepy horror movie) - so we diverted (hastily - The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. come to mind!!) and visited Alnwick town instead. It was raining so we sat in a café and everyone but Hayley (feeling car sick) ate – me and Hayley walked around the shops and bought some Christmas cards. Hayley got hit on the head by an umbrella (we don't think it was deliberate - Poor Hayley!) Everybody went back to the cottages and ate (yes, more food!!!) Carole, Kt, Kate and Maggie did return to the cottages via a little diversion .... because Carole made the exact same mistake as Jools almost had on the first day and missed the turning, unfortunately she was in the wrong lane on the A1 so had to go up to the next exit. (Thank goodness for SatNav!!)
Day 7, Friday
Everyone said bye bye to Carole as she left for home laden with presents for Sam (ermm..... not sure you can get to Manchester via Berwick ..... shhh - don't tell Pauld (hubby), she'll never hear the last of it! and she wondered why the SatNav kept saying 'turn around when possible')). Escoffier and Metzy ‘did’ Edinburgh for the day – they can tell you how that went but I know they enjoyed it.
Me and Hayley drove Steffy to the train station in Berwick then had a nosey around the town. On the way back to the cottages I took Hayley to see something but ended up driving into the wrong place - a farmyard, where a big black dog barked and barked away (told you ..... The Hills have Eyes!! (lol)). I turned the car around and as we were driving away the dog was running along right next to the car! Hayley wanted to take a picture but I said no because I didn’t want to get bitten! Later Kt, Hayley, me, Kate and Maggie went to eat at the local hotel, then went back to the cottages and chatted away.
Day 8, Saturday
Escoffier and Laura left after breakfast to drive home, and Maggie and Kate2003 were chauffeured to Newcastle Airport for the flight back to London by a handsome friend of mine. And then there were three! Kt, Hayley and I stayed at the Cottage and chilled and then went to eat out at the pub (can you see a theme starting here??).
Day 9, Sunday
Jools and Hayley and Kt said goodbye, Kt’s Mum and Dad visited for the day and took Kt home.
Outcome: People made lifelong friends, some gained confidence, lots were able to offload feelings and emotions, muscles were soothed at the Spa and Northumberland is still in recovery! Over the week we shed tears - by the bucket - we almost needed shares in Asda tissues!! It was a humbling experience to sit together and listen to people's stories and experiences of cancer in a receptive understanding atmosphere and to be able to cry openly and not worry about upsetting anyone. The best bit was we could provide real rib-crushing hugs , not just cyber hugs - and it felt brilliant. It has been a pleasure to have enabled this special event to take place, I am hoping that other members who have formed friendships on the site will not see our event as an ‘exclusive’ one (after all I couldn’t invite everyone!), but as an inspirational one and to maybe think about doing something similar themselves, or attending the next event (Madchester Dec 6th). Thanks to Whatnow for getting the communication started in the first place and thanks to you all for listening, Jools (exhausted but happy) x x x
Aww
It was really nice being able to read this back - very happy but sad too because I miss everybody.
I had a fantastic time in Northumberland and I really believe it helped everyone in one way or another.
Jools - you did a brilliant job organising everything and I don't think we can thank you enough!!
I am delighted to have new Mothers, Aunties and Grandmothers and I know that I'll always remember this Holiday.
Miss and love you all.

Memories..at the corner of mind........
Hola Chicas!!!
How do you know what we all did each day??? We're you keeping a diary?? lol. Thank you for organising this trip Jools. Had a great time even with my PMT for the first few days!!ffs Never thought that so many people would get on so well and so quickly. In the normal run of life none of us would have ever have come into contact with each other and yet despite the diversity of the group, we all got on really well. Defo the biggest group of nutters I ever did meet! Shared many laughs, shed some much needed tears and even ended up with bruise marks on my arms from all the hugs!!!!
PS Apologises to the residents of Beadnell, particularly the man with the gravel driveway, ours actions were without intent! Still crying laughing about that even now (Kate and Maggie you are such a bad influence on me!) lol Mwar, mwar, mwar (Big hugs amigos xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
Thank you so much Jools
My dear friends -
It was the most fabulous few days and I feel very privileged that I was able to share it with you all! For the first time since my diagnosis, I felt NORMAL and it was wonderful to be able to relax in such lovely surroundings with such a marvellous group of people. I hate the word but it's the only possible one . . . you girls are awesome! I can't remember having laughed so much in years - nor felt able to let go and talk openly and spontaneously about cancer (even in blogs and forum postings, I tend to reread and rewrite and rejig).
Jools - I can't thank you enough for making it possible - you are a star and such an amazing woman and I am so grateful to have you as 'my mate'
And you other lovely ladies, thank you for your friendship and love, and for welcoming Maggie and naming William!
Lots of love, Ethel xxxxx

What can I say other than your blog is SUPERB Jools!! We had such a terrific time, such a memorable holiday, with a great bunch of people.
I'm so looking forward to seeing everyone again (?? I hope ??) at the Madchester Christmas Rave. Where I can wear my 'gladrags' as opposed to just wearing my 'walking-around-the-countryside-and-on-the-beach-rags'!!
Thanks again Jools for organising it and taking the time to capture all the memories on your blog.
Your mate

Thank you Jools
It was lovely. I was very disappointed that I had to come home to attend a funeral instead of staying at least a couple of days as I had planned. I had met almost everyone before - so it was lovely to see lots of friends from Buxton and Leicester, but it was also wonderful to put some faces to other WN people who had only been names up until them. Lesley Wiggy and I saw some really beautiful scenery up at Lindisfarne and managed, thanks to Jools' warning about reading the tide time-tables NOT to get stuck on the causeway as the tide came in. The meal in the evening - with Scoffy cooking so many variations for all our different diets, was wonderful. The quizzes were really taxing, and people had obviously worked really hard finding their questions (I forgot mine, but everyone said they were glad as they didn't know anything about Art anyway - next time, mateys!). Poor Jools was having kittens in case anything got dropped on the carpets, but I think we all behaved ourselves like ladies (ha ha ha)!
I usually fall asleep really early nowadays but the quizzes and chat kept me going until midnight. Even then, I was still up at 12.45 helping Denning and Steffy create an impromptu wardrobe out of the spare cot. My room was beautiful (I was hot-bedding with Kate2003 who inheritted this room when I left) with a wonderful sunrise behind Beadnell church. As it was Sunday morning, the bells began to ring - marvellous for someone who is used to the police helicopters and sirens and continual traffic of a city).
I had forgotten to pack my battery charger so my camera was running almost on empty. I did take a lovely one of some of us in jimjams on Sunday morning. Putting this up on FB even really tiny got me death threats though, so I'll keep that one just to treasure myself of some wonderful people! I haven't blogged it earlier as Laura and Scoffy are teasing me about my blogs being like "Barbara Cartland". I've never read any Barbara Cartland, but it isn't someone I'd seen my life mirroring!!! They are such a tease....
On the way home we managed to see the Angel of the North for the second time, then called at Richmond in N. Yorkshire, and at the peaceful Jervaulx Abbey before the sky went black and threw buckets of rain across the windscreen. We also had a longish Victor Meldrew moment sitting in traffic jams on the A1 but, hey, that's holidays for you.
I never thought, when Jools first asked me, that I'd still be around to go. I just paid because I hoped I might be - and Jools was right: I made it. So a huge thank you to Jools - all those months of bed-rotas, hundreds of private messages, for getting us there, for sorting us out, and for giving us such a fantastic time. It may not be in Jools' diary, but it is in mine (and it ain't like Barbara Cartland ROFL). THANK YOU. xxxxxxx Penny
doh
apologises for my spelling errors...I need more sleep!!!! xxxxxxxxxx ;)
WIshin
I sooooooooo wish Id been able to go, it looks like you all had a fab time, perhaps I will be able to go to the next one.xxxxx
Next one!!!
(Faints)
So hard to follow all these comments
I have to say ditto to all the comments already posted. Jools you knew how much I needed the break , thank you for asking me, and thank you for organizing it, which was a trial in itself.
To the rest of the 'inmates' I just want to say a huge thank you for your company, I feel really privileged to know you.
I have to say it was one of the best breaks I have ever had, we laughed, we cried (and that was okay) we danced and sang,it was such an easygoing mix of people, you could not have wished for better company, and the weather was pretty kind to us as well.
So only have one more thing to say,
when are we doing it again??????
Love to you all
Steffy.
ps.
the windymiller reference from escoffiers posting ,has to do with Jools making vegetable and lentil broth for lunch before I flew home on the Friday evening, who needed a plane to fly home, I had enough wind to power a 747.
Good Morning.....Good Moooooorning....
How did they get together
These Cancer linked mad fools?
Through a very special lady
Yep..you know its JOOOLS!!!!!
Ramsey, Novelli and Rhodes
Have cooked for many a toff
But us lot had a 5* chef
Our very special Scoff!
Dining at the Hilton
You might have Posh and Becks
Staying at Cosy Cottages
We got Kate and Metz!
Maggie and Metz were ft and well
And helped us - no need to nag
But did they have bad habits?
Like alcohol and a fag??
Debs had added to Asda's haul
And bought us a haunch of deer.
Altho those who were veggie or squeamish
Said it made them feel a bit queer!
When Steffy decided to stay at home
She got lumbered with basting Bambi..
Every twenty minutes....
She was knackered and needed a brandy!
KT loved her bed
As much as she loved her mouse
That's why shes a whizz on computer
As she practised in the house.
Penny left us some oils
Tho she couldn't stay too long
And Steffy started "Good Morning"
Our special cottage song!
Carole had some video clips
As a doting loving mum
But it was only Sam we saw
But also her husband's bum!!
Hayley hid from the camera
And said she hated her ugly mug
But we all told her she's LOVELY
And needed to give her a hug. (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Marge)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
So much laughter, love and tears
We must do this again
But only if you promise
To invite this shopaholic Den

A beautiful part of the world - for beautiful people!
Nice one Jools!
I really enjoyed reading your Blog. I've never seen an episode of Big Brother etc. but I am sure it was nothing compared to all your antics!
In terms of some of the places visited - Lindisfarne, Bamburgh, that poison garden etc. Brought back memories! Without the shopping though - I'm allergic to shopping centres!
Heather and I stayed in a cottage at Seahouses - whilst she was proof reading her book a couple of years ago. A wonderful peaceful area!
Glad you all enjoyed it so much! Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Manchester!!

Aww Jools
Oh I loved reading the fantastic blog of your week up north and am very jealous. The taxi rank and suit case saga had me giggling. Well done organising it all, you all throughly deserved the wonderful time, eating, drinking and getting very merry.
Love Carolx
Thanks
for everyones lovely comments. I really cannot express in words just how much good it did everyone who went! Hope others who read it may decide to have a go at organising something like this with their friends. Jools
Alnwick
Sounds like you had a great time. I designed the Alnwick Castle water garden BTW. Glad you enjoyed it.
WOW
Amazing Sean !! We loved it but it was too cold to stand in front of the the water jets. The water sculptures are cool. My favourite was the vortex! Bet you wish you were with us (14 rampant women!!) LOL Jools x
Rampant?
-or overtired and naughty? LOL.
Wow!!!
Sean - what can I say, you must be very proud of your achievement with the water features, they were truly amazing!! We had such a lovely time and Alnwick Gardens were breathtaking - even in winter, on my 'bucket list' is the desire to see them in Spring, Summer and Autumn!!! lol
fantastic water features...
hiya sean..yeah agreed with the rest of the family....very cool...carole and jools did fancy to have a skinny deeping to try ur water fountains....the rest of us we were going to try to recorder...so we get some money for another trip and we were going to send it to " u ve been frame lol"...

skinnydipping
The original idea was that people would be encouraged to swim in the grande cascade. I'd heard that elf an safety worries had made them ban it. Not that anyone would stop you. Noone in their right mind would take on someone tough enough for skinnydipping in alnwick in November!
